Robert E. Nugent is a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas in Wichita, initially appointed June 14, 2000, and he served as Chief Judge from 2002-16. He has also served on the U.S. Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Tenth Circuit since 2002. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Nugent was a partner in the Wichita firm of Morris, Laing, Evans, Brock & Kennedy, Chtd., where he practiced in the areas of commercial litigation, real estate and bankruptcy law. He was admitted to the Kansas and Federal Bars in 1980, was president of the National Conference of Bank- ruptcy Judges from 2014-15 and was secretary (2010-12) and a member of NCBJ's Board of Governors (2006-09). He has also served as a member of the Committee on Federal and State Jurisdiction of the  U.S. Judicial Conference and is a former president of the Wichita Bar Association (1998-99). A frequent speaker for bankruptcy organizations and continuing legal education groups, Judge Nugent is a co-editor and chapter author of the Kansas Bankruptcy Handbook, Third Edition (Kansas Bar Association 2009) and a member of the board of editors of the Journal of the Kansas Bar Association. He received his B.A. in English and political science in 1977 with honors from the University of Kansas and his J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1980.
