William S. Hackney

William S. Hackney is a partner with SmithAmundsen LLC in Chicago, where he focuses on representing debtors, lenders, secured creditors, creditors’ committees and trustees, among others, in all manners of chapter 11 and chapter 7 cases, as well as out-of-court workouts and restructurings. He assists financial institutions and cannabis-related businesses on the interaction between state cannabis laws and federal banking and bankruptcy laws, and he acts as outside bankruptcy counsel to a number of corporations, providing general business counseling in distressed situations. In addition, he represents a number of his clients in their FDCPA, FCRA and similar consumer finance defense claims. Mr. Hackney has been listed in Illinois Super Lawyers and is a member of ABI and the National Creditors Bar Association, for which he serves as co-editor of its Bankruptcy Section Newsletter. He also is a former SteeringCommittee member of the Turnaround Management Association and a past co-chair of its Future Leaders Committee, and he is a former member of the Northern District of Illinois Bankruptcy Court LiaisonCommittee. Mr. Hackney received his B.A. in 1994 from the University of Illinois and his J.D. in 1997 from St. John’s University School of Law.
