Ryan Zahara

Ryan Zahara is a partner with MLT Aikins LLP in Calgary, Alta., and focuses his practice on insolvency and restructuring, banking and commercial lending, litigation, real estate and energy. Over his 15-year career, he has been involved in numerous restructuring proceedings under the Companies Creditors’ Arrangement Act (CCAA) and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA). He also regularly acts on behalf of court-appointed officers in insolvency proceedings, including receivers, monitors and trustees. Mr. Zahara has represented clients from a wide range of industries, including agricultural, retail, real estate, mining, oil and gas and manufacturing. He appears regularly before the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Appeal, and he has appeared at the Supreme Court of Canada. He also has appeared before the Saskatchewan Court of King’s Bench and the Ontario Superior Court. Mr. Zahara also has advised on commercial litigation issues, including corporate foreclosures, enforcement actions and construction disputes. He is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada, is a past president of the Northwest Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association, is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association, and is a former president of the Canadian Bar Association’s (South) Insolvency Section. He was recognized in Best Lawyers for Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law in 2022. Mr. Zahara received his B.A. in political science in Alberta in 2000 and his LL.B. in Manitoba in 2005.
