Hon. Allan L. Gropper is a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York, appointed on Oct. 4, 2000. In 1972, he joined the law firm of White & Case, becoming a partner in 1978. He was for many years head of the firm’s bankruptcy and reorganization practice group and was active in many of the nation’s largest chapter 11 cases, including Manville Corp., Texaco, LTV Corp., Federated Department Stores/Allied Stores Corp., Maxwell Communications Corp., MGM, United States Lines, Pan American World Airways and Waterman Steamship Corp. He also was active in international insolven- cies and restructurings and was located in the White & Case Hong Kong office from 1999-2000. Judge Gropper has lectured in several foreign countries on insolvency matters and is a co-editor of a twovolume text, International Insolvency, published in 2000. He is an adjunct professor of law at Fordham Law School and teaches a course on international insolvency law. Judge Gropper received his B.A. cum laude from Yale University in 1965 and from 1965-66 was a Fulbright tutor at Christ Church College in Kanpur, India. He received his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1969 and became an attorney in the Civil Appeals Unit of the New York City Legal Aid Society.
